Devotees around the world are eager to welcome the beginning of the most awaited and blessed month of the year. Kartik (Damodar) month is the best, the purest of purifiers, and most glorious of all months. Just as the Vedas are best among the scriptures, as Ganga best among the rivers, and as Tulasi is best among the plants, similarly among all twelve months of the year, Kartik is the most dear to Lord Krishna. Damodar Maas is a month long festival commemorating the Damodar-lila, a sweet and divine pastime of baby Krishna stealing butter and being chastised by Mother Yashoda. Since Krishna was bound by a rope by Mother Yashoda during this pastime, He became known as Lord Damodara (“dama” means rope and “udara” means belly). The pious month is also special because of the many auspicious occasions that will take place including Dhanteras, Diwali, Govardhan Puja, Gopastami, Tulsi Vivah, and the disappearance day of our dear Srila Prabhuapda. This year (2022), the festivities for this glorious month will begin on October 9th and will last until November 7th.
The glories of Kartik month are highlighted in the scriptures, particularly the puranas. It is stated that when one offers a lamp during this month to the Lord, all his sins that have been accumulated for thousands and millions of births are destroyed in a half a blink of an eye. By offering this lamp, one has already performed all yajnas and bathed in all the holy rivers. Whoever performs even a little sincere worship to Lord Hari during this month is awarded His eternal spiritual abode. Any act of kindness, vrata, service, or offerings performed for Krishna yield great results, since everything done during this month is multiplied by a thousand times. One can make immense spiritual progress during this time of the year, be relieved from the miseries of one’s sins and material sufferings, and attain pure bhakti of the Lord in His abode.
According to the Brahma Khanda, “In the month of Kartik, which is very dear to Sri Hari, one who bathes early in the morning attains the merit of bathing in all places of pilgrimage. Anybody who offers the Lord a ghee lamp in the month of Kartik, O brahmana, becomes free from all kinds of sins, and he goes to the abode of Lord Hari.”
ISKCON of Ujjain celebrates the festival of Kartik in a very special way by offering “Deep Daan” (lamps) daily, chanting the glories of Lord Krishna, conducting sankirtana, and honoring prasadam.
Take the opportunity to make the month of Kartik extra blessed, enjoyable, and special by celebrating it in association with devotees. Join us every day with your friends and families at ISKCON Ujjain for offering lamps and singing kirtana. Everyone is also welcome to perform a beautiful service by sponsoring jewelry, dresses, and other offerings for the deities. We look forward to your association during the celebrations for the most special month of the year and request you all to come together to serve Lord Damodara with love and devotion. Hare Krishna!
